Ubiquitous indie frontman Ben Gibbard will leave the comfort of his band(s) behind for the release of his debut solo album this fall. Best known for heading alt-emo group Death Cab for Cutie, as well as the comparatively lesser-known Postal Service and veritably obscure All Time Quarterback!, Gibbard’s bid for independence, Former Lives, is scheduled to drop October 15th in Europe and October 16th in the States.

Apparently, The Washington native’s bold move was eight years in the making. It took relocating from his notoriously dour hometown of Seattle to the inspirational Sunshine State for almost a decade’s worth of material to come together.

And now that it has, the question is: What’s next? Gibbard has said he’ll play a series of shows following the album’s release in October, but no official promotional tour has been announced. In other words, the soft-rocker’s primed for a Former Lives tour in 2013, though the extent and breadth of his next solo step remains to be seen.

In the meantime, see Ben sing by himself, see Ben sing with Death Cab, see Ben sing with Postal Service, and (now that you’ve heard of them) see Ben sing with All Time Quarterback!:

Ben Gibbard: “Such Great Heights”

Death Cab for Cutie: “I Will Follow You Into The Dark”

The Postal Service: “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight”

All Time Quarterback!: “Plans Get Complex”
