North Carolina continues its 200 year-old policy of rebellion, and its three year-old policy of the Carolina Rebellion festival, a hard-rock and heavy metal extravaganza, held on Rock City Campgrounds at Charlotte Motor Speedway (in Concord, NC). Due to its success in previous years, the festival has expanded and fans can now enjoy two full days of music at eardrum-damaging decibel levels. Carolina Rebellion has also moved from Rockingham Speedway to the Charlotte Motor City Speedway, which will be its permanent home. (Luckily, North Carolina has no shortage of speedways, it seems.) According to Gary Spivack, co-executive producer for Right Arm Entertainment, “It’s our mission to make Carolina Rebellion the biggest and best rock festival in the entire Mid-Atlantic region!”
If last year is any indication, Spivack is right on track to meet his goal. In 2012, the festival exceeded 30,000 attendees and the logistical problems from 2011, of traffic and long waits on food lines, were addressed and solved. If the 2013 festival goes as well as it did in 2012, then Carolina Rebellion will be well on its way to being the Mid-Atlantic monster Spivack dreamed it to be. Unlike other smaller metal festivals, camping is an option at Carolina Rebellion. It was added in 2012, and the organizers hope to further expand the campsite in 2013. Though there is a campground, don’t expect luscious fields at the concert. The inside of the speedway is dirt, and moshing fans have been known to kick up dust clouds.
