Cody Johnson might not be a household name yet, but a few successful singles have him well on the way there. The East Texan is drawing lines between the isolationist Red Dirt scene and Nashville’s Music Row, bringing a bit of Texas with him while not being so staunchly anti-country-industry that he’s opposed to making hits.

Clearly, the move is working. Johnson is selling out shows to fans who love to hear a former rodeo cowboy who knows his way around a hook. All that said, don’t expect to hear Johnson over a snap track or with auto-tune on his vocals.

“I don’t want to be bubblegum, and I don’t care if there’s a $50 million signing bonus to be bubblegum. It’s not worth it to me,” he shared in a recent interview.

That stubbornness couldn’t keep him off a tour with megastar Luke Combs and opening slots for Blake Shelton. Fans looking to hear Johnson stretch out and play more of his own stuff will have plenty of opportunities this summer. He’s currently on a red-hot tour behind his album Ain’t Nothin’ To It.

Johnson will play from now through the fall, with tour dates stretching from Montana to Massachusetts, Louisiana to Las Vegas. He’s also on tap for several country music festivals, including the Sunfest Country Music Festival in Canada (August 1) and the Country Freedom fest in California (October 19).
