Dream Theater has never really stopped chugging. The progressive metal-heads have been building impressive and heavy soundscapes for over 30 years across 14 albums, the most recent coming this year. All this is to say: they don’t really need to do album anniversary concerts. Still, in honor of their diehard fans’ love of their 1999 concept album Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory, the group is hitting the road to play said album in full.

The 20th anniversary shows will make use of the two decades of touring experience between then and now, bringing the story of the album to life with an impressive stage show.

“We put a lot of work as we always do into the production side so that the show becomes more than just about the songs, but about the experience. We want people to have a very stimulating visual experience,” guitarist John Petrucci said in an interview with PureGrainAudio. “We try to do something new. This ‘Scenes’ show we’re doing is nothing like the original tour we did 20 years ago. This has all new animated content, really depicting the story. That’s what we try to do. Every time we go out, we try to do something fresh and unique, especially for people who have seen the band multiple times.”

And plenty of fans will get the chance to see it on their nearly month-long celebration of Scenes. The tour starts at the Louisville Palace in Kentucky on September 26. Things stay fairly Midwestern for that first week before the band heads east for a show at Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theatre. They kick around the South for a few shows in Raleigh and Richmond before heading up to Albany’s Palace Theatre. The tour runs back through the South, Southwest and Midwest before closing in Ontario on November 11.

Tickets are on sale July 26; take a look at the concert schedule below.
