Dropkick Murphys Tour

Irish-American punk rockers the Dropkick Murphys recently announced dates for their 2013 Australian/North American tour, which is surely music to the ears of legions of dedicated fans, except of course the neo-Nazis. While one expects a bit of drunken aggression at a St. Patrick’s Day season Dropkick Murphys concert, singer Ken Casey took matters into his own hands, literally, when he spotted a fan giving a Nazi salute on stage at their March 13 show at Terminal 5 in New York. Despite some recent threats from Hilter-heiling fans Down Under, the band will be headed to Australia on March 30 to play at the Byron Bay Bluesfest. After a handful of stops, including Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, the tour brings the band back to the US starting on April 6 at The Republik in Honolulu. Major festival stops include Coachella on both April 13 and April 20, Sasquatch! Music Festival on May 26 and Orion Music + More on June 8.

The Dropkick Murphys, formed in 1996 in Quincy, MA, found early success as the opener for The Mighty Mighty Bosstones‘ 1997 tour. Their continued success over the years can partly be attributed to the fact that they are the Red Sox of the music industry (and in fact are responsible for the Boston baseball team’s theme song, a version of the 1902 tune “Tessie”), with a fiercely dedicated regional fanbase. They also have strong political ties, as long-time supporters of working class and union causes, to say nothing of their willingness to beat down a skinhead at their own show. Their song “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” was also a highlight of the soundtrack to the 2006 Martin Scorcese film The Departed, which only helped cement their status as (drop)-kicking all kinds of ass.
