Funk Up Your New Year’s Eve in New Orleans
When it comes to diversity – people, food, music and more – it doesn’t get much funkier than New Orleans. While the first party you think about in the Big Easy may be Mardi Gras, the Crescent City also knows how to ring in the new year with plenty of style. One of the funkiest bands that calls New Orleans home – Dumpstaphunk – has just announced a New Year’s Eve party it’s headlining alongside England’s The New Mastersounds at The Joy Theater. Jon Cleary will be opening for the two groups, and you can expect plenty of special guests to pop-in for the coolest (and last) party of the year.
Dumpstaphunk has been together over ten years now, and founding member Ivan Neville’s quintet released its latest album, Dirty Word, back in 2013. The New Mastersounds got together 15 years ago and have dropped 14 studio recordings of their own, including 2014’s Therapy. While these two jazz fusion outfits come from very different parts of the world, their diversity and fluency in funk should prove to be a perfect way to ring in the new year in New Orleans. Tickets for the December 31 Dumpstaphunk concert just went on sale Friday, so feel free to check out the box office before they sell out.
