Earl Sweatshirt came into the public consciousness with the idea that he needed to be free. Some Rap Songs, his freaked-out slab of jazz-rap, wasn’t fully free but it was a step in the right direction.

The album released Sweatshirt from his recording contract with Columbia and now he’s ready to get weird.

“Figuring out how you can be radical from within the system breaks your head,” Earl told Pitchfork earlier this year. “That’s where I’m really at: that frustrating-ass place. And this is the best attempt I got. Only so much can happen above ground…I’m excited to be free because then I can do riskier shit.”

But before we get to hear that riskier work, Sweatshirt is hitting the road with a marauding band of rap oddballs like BbyMutha, MIKE and Na-Kel Smith. A Tour Starring Earl Sweatshirt and Friends will criss-cross the United States and Canada, stopping all over California at venues like the Regency Ballroom and The Novo, before running through Texas and closing out in Atlanta.

Earl shared an appropriately surreal short film along with the announcement. “Nowhere, Nobody” follows Earl from a basketball court to a glitchy nightmare.
