Wikipedia refers to him as a “laptop artist,” which, although as good a name as any other for “music producer” these days, nonetheless belies the creative inventiveness behind Flying Lotus’ signature style. Any fan of the Cali rapper will tell you the talent he inherited from his great-aunt, jazz pianist Alice Coltrane (wife of John), hasn’t come manufactured courtesy of Pro Tools. And, if you doubt it, try hitting up one of Lotus’ upcoming shows – you’ve got until May 25 – to judge the young Mr. Steven Ellison, and his live artistic output, for yourself.
Flying Lotus’ first performance of his upcoming spring tour is going on right now (3/12), at SXSW, however, his solo shows won’t get under way until April 21. Another Texas concert, as well as gigs in Atlanta, DC, Philly, NYC, Boston, Chicago, and several stops in Canada, have all been scheduled for late April through May. We’ve got tickets to a few of those dates now, although look for the list of discounts to grow in the weeks ahead.
