Four Tet – For Everyone Who Thinks The xx is too Mainstream
If you find yourself instinctively associating electronic music with Skrillex’s bro-step, then maybe a dose of Four Tet could do you some good. Born Kieran Hedben, and better known by his stage name, Four Tet, this UK-based artist makes eerily melodic electronic music, combining elements of hip hop, electronica, techno, jazz, and folk music with live instrumentation. In addition to working as a solo artist, he also has done remixes for many popular bands (such as Radiohead, Aphex Twin and The xx). Four Tet’s most recent album, Pink, was released in August 2012. After playing a couple shows in Australia near the end of 2012, he’s scheduled to play in London and Manchester in 2013.
Hedben formed his first band, Fridge, with classmates from the Elliot School. When he was 15, the band signed their first record deal (way to make the rest of us look unmotivated). Since then, Hedben has only gained acclaim and finesse. Caribou chose him to headline at the ATP Nightmare Before Christmas festival they co-curated in 2012; he’s opened for Radiohead and collaborated with Thom Yorke. Forget The xx; if you really want to impress your friends from across the pond you need to start name-dropping more underground UK electronic artists.
