Hansard starred and wrote music for the 2007 Irish musical Once, in which he played—shocker—an Irish musician. The film was the sleeper hit of that year, made on a budget of only $150,000. Hansard and Markéta Irglová’s theme, “Falling Slowly,” won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song. The soundtrack (which Hansard produced) also received a Grammy Award nomination.
