Godspeed You! Black Emperor Tour

For a band so keen on the exclamation point, you’d expect a cheerier affair from Canadian post-rockers Godspeed You! Black Emperor. However, where the band is short on feel-good hits, it more than makes up for it with a dramatic, almost operatic feel to their slowly rising crescendos, their harsh found sound sampling and intriguing mix of rock and classical instrumentation. On the heels of their long-awaited 2012 reunion album Alellujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend! (exclamation point count: 4), the band has announced their international tour. While no US dates have been slated, fans in Europe and Asia can catch them in Tokyo on April 9th – 10th at the Ebisu Liquid Room and at The Vine in Hong Kong, before they hit the festival circuit in Europe. They’re scheduled to play at Way Out West in Gothenburg and the Flow Festival in Helsinki before wrapping up in Paris on August 10th at Le Trianon.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor, formed in Montreal in 1994, got their exclamatory name from a 1970’s documentary about a Japanese biker gang. What was originally a trio grew eventually to an outfit of nine, due to a relatively open door policy for new members to join (essentially, play an instrument and be cool). This attitude has extended to their concerts, which are considered taper-friendly, welcoming audience members to record their live performances. While the band has only released four studio albums, members of the band have been involved in side projects such as Silver Mount Zion, Fly Pan-Am and Set Fire to Flames.
