Top Houston Festivals
94.5 The Buzz Weenie Roast
Houston’s ‘new rock alternative’ station 94.5 ‘The Buzz’ is happening at the Woodlands Pavilion this year, and it looks like it’s going to be quite a show. With acts like Cypress Hill, 311 and Sublime, this Saturday-long event is definitely worth checking out. Don’t forget about the pre-show happy hour with discount beers and hotdogs- doors open at 3:30 PM.
Houston Press Music Awards Showcase Festival
The annual concert series in which readers of the Houston Press get to watch and vote for their favorite local bands. This year, 45 bands have been selected to perform in a seven hour period at eight different venues. The event emphasizes the up-and-coming musical talent in the Houston scene, giving lesser-known groups an opportunity to share their music on the big stage. Wristbands for all-day access are ten bucks right now, but will go up to fifteen if you buy them at the door. For those interested, the award ceremony for the winning bands will take place on August 6 at Warehouse Live, and will be free to the public.
Boogie, Blues and Brews
Truly a festival for everybody. BBB is a three day long event in League City, Texas, which features ‘the best of blues, country, zydeco and rockabilly music’. The weekend offers much more than great music though; feel free to spend your time at the draft beer garden, amongst the food vendors, at the tailgating party, or at one of several competitions judging chili, sweet tea and margaritas. If you buy your tickets now, you can snag a weekend pass for only $20.
Houston International Jazz Festival
In it’s twenty-third year of appearance, the Houston International Jazz Festival is an established showcase of talent for the genre. With performers ranging from passionate students to contemporary jazz legends, this weekend should not be missed by anyone in the region that considers themselves a fan of the genre. Tickets start at only twenty-five bucks. Don’t forget a key part of the weekend- most of the performances are inside!
