He’s the same age (or younger) than his fellow countrymen One Direction, but to listen to Jake Bugg you’d think he’d already amassed a history far outstripping and belying his 18 years. Maybe it’s the old-soul lyricism of his latest single, “Two Fingers,” which includes the refrain: “I’m an old dog but I’ve learned some new tricks, yeah.” Maybe it has something to do with his folksy timbre, reminiscent of Bob Dylan, that’s like Julia Roberts’ cheshire grin or the bump in Owen Wilson’s nose: an atypical, unpolished feature that defines the allure of the whole. There’s nothing poppy, synthesized, auto-corrected, or hidden behind great hair (though he’s got that going for him, too) about Bugg. Similar to other Brit imports Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling, he likes to use banjos, inject a little bluegrass and inspire ’60s-era comparisons like our aforementioned nod to Dylan. If he isn’t the anti-1D, the anti-Bieber, the antidote to the boy-band resurgence – he’ll inspire his own teenage hysteria, if in a more reflective type of adolescent girl – he’s a pretty cool breath of nu air.

Bugg hasn’t made much of a mainstream splash here in the States, though with Rolling Stone magazine’s recent, brief spotlight, he’s on track to gain wider recognition. For the curious in NYC, you can try to catch him live at The Slipper Room on December 6. We’ve also got tickets for an early January show in California, just before he heads out on his official 2013 tour of the UK.
