Catch Midnight Spin, Our Live Band to Watch, @ Mercury Lounge This Friday!
Live Music NYC
New York, NY, is a renown, heralded and notorious place for attracting the full spectrum of creative types: from prolific drafters to inveterate dilettantes to, every few shows – tucked into a bar on the Lower East Side or packed, chum-like, in Williamsburg’s Union Pool –, musicians whose display of energy and lyrical deftness testify to The Big Apple’s enduring claim to the cutting-edge.
Musicians like Midnight Spin.
Midnight Spin Background
Frontman Mike Corbett and drummer Danny Scull are former fifth-grade pals who began developing the band’s catchy, no-holds-barred rock sound in middle school, playing throughout high school and during college vacations. Bass player Ben Waters and keyboardist Jeremy Cohen joined up in college, while guitarist/vocalist Jim Terranova “floated in on a breeze via Craigslist,” says Mike. “He was a lot cleaner-looking back then.”
Chalk Jim’s grungification up to Midnight Spin’s love of ’70s and ’90s rock, two eras Mike says have impacted the group’s sound. The thriving music scene in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the famous neighborhood from which the rockers hail, also exerts its contemporary influence. “We definitely soak up” what Williamsburg has to offer, says Mike, but ultimately, Midnight Spin’s focus is on their “choruses, provoking lyrics and overall just putting the energy out there that hopefully makes the crowd put their smartphones away and get lost in the music.”
Midnight Spin Buzz
Noble aims, and ones the artists are well on their way toward achieving, above and beyond an audience of NYC indie-rock enthusiasts. That group of music fans have already gone gaga for Midnight Spin, and have been doing so for years. MS were named by The Deli NYC as their Best Emerging Artist back in 2009, and awarded the Best Indie/Alt/Hard Rock Song award at the Independent Music Awards in 2010. Over two years and one successful EP (Through the Mojo Wire) later, and this band of Brooklynites are finally ready to release their debut album: Don’t Let Me Sleep.
Midnight Spin Don’t Let Me Sleep Album Party
As the name hints, Don’t Let Me Sleep is, in part, the product of both Mike and Jim’s struggles with shuteye. Mike describes how the album’s theme came together:
-
“It was funny, because Jim and I were talking about some lyrics we were writing and found out that we were both on the topic of sleep… He’s right in the epicenter of the ever-expanding Williamsburg, and there is constant construction and nightlife and also the occasional hobo swinging a crowbar into your building facade at 5 AM that can prevent you from getting your eight hours a night. On the other hand, Don’t Let Me Sleep was somewhat inspired by my fear of being a complete zombie due to Seasonal Affective Disorder, which can cause me to sleep entirely too much.”
Trying circumstances begetting an artistic outpouring? Sounds like the right kind of formula for creative success. If you’d like to judge the results for yourself, we suggest catching Midnight Spin live at their album release party this Friday (1/11) at NYC’s Mercury Lounge. We’ve got tickets to the can’t-miss gig of the new year (so far), as well as discount links to other upcoming Midnight Spin shows.
