Last May, on a rainy night in Bushwick, wet Mutual Benefit fans (aka me) crowded on couches and floors in someone’s apartment to see the little known, much loved musician weave graceful soundscapes. Flash forward five months and Jordan Lee and his cohorts a are wooing the internet airwaves (maybe you’ve heard of “Pitchfork” before?) with Lee’s “debut” (hint – he’s actually made several albums before this – check out Cowboy’s Prayer if you want to get some real fan cred) Love’s Crushing Diamond. It’s one of those rare albums that’s actually a work of art in itself – with field recorded transitions and wind chime interludes, the songs have a way of flowing into each other, and you’re floating down the river of sound until you come to its end. And then you hit repeat.

It’s almost like listening to Bright Eyes, except you’re not sad and neither is Conor. If you don’t fall for Lee’s perfectly delivered lyrics, fall for dreamy Jake Falby whose violin playing will make your heart strings tremble. They’re embarking on an East Coast “microtour” (Lee’s words), with accompanying bass and drums, which kicks off on November 9, in (unsurprisingly) Brooklyn, at Baby’s All Right – a venue so hip it doesn’t even have website to hyperlink to. From there, they’ll hit PA, Ohio and before ending up in Boston at P.A.’s Lounge. Sure they might have already gotten “Best New Music” on Pitchfork and “Artist to Watch” on Stereogum, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to hop on the Mutual Benefit band-wagon.
