Los Angeles Kings Back to Defend Stanley Cup
2013 Stanley Cup Playoff Team – Los Angeles Kings
They’re back, but are they ready? The Los Angeles Kings had a frustrating start to the season, but they have asserted themselves over the second half to secure a higher playoff spot than the one they used last year to win the NHL Playoffs in 2012. However, they have been average at best over the last month, finishing the season 7-6. A strong showing against division rival San Jose in the season finale finally secured a winning record in April; however, a couple of those final losses came against teams like Detroit and Minnesota who were already in playoff mode, desperate to punch their ticket in the the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
That mentality is what keyed the Kings to the ultimate NHL victory last year, taking down top seed Vancouver in a first round sweep. Their first test in the 2013 NHL playoffs will be the St. Louis Blues, who the Kings took out in round two last year, sweeping away the talented defense and goalies of the Blues with the stellar play of Jonathon Quick and blue liners like Drew Doughty and Rob Scuderi. The LA Kings defeated St. Louis three times in the shortened 2013 regular season, and it seems like they’d have the upper-hand in this NHL Playoff first round matchup. This year, however, the Los Angeles Kings won’t catch anyone by surprise in the NHL playoffs. Instead, everyone will be gunning for the defending Stanley Cup champs. Can they handle the pressure? Can they get to the second round where a matchup with the Stanley Cup favorite Chicago Blackhawks could await them? The Kings are hoping their mediocre April performance is the exception, not the rule.

Los Angeles Kings Stanley Cup Playoff Opponent
The LA Kings earned a No. 5 seed for the 2013 NHL playoffs; while many teams may be disappointed to not have home-ice advantage in a place like the Staples Center, the Kings proved last season that they can go on the road and beat anyone. They will start in St. Louis for round one, where they are 2-0 this season.
