Two years ago, psych-pop band of Montreal created a Kickstarter campaign to fund the release of then-titled documentary Song Dynasties. After numerous backers (and prizes), the documentary (now called The Past Is A Grotesque Animal) is finally ready, and a trailer (see below) has been released. of Montreal will host a string of movie showings to promote the film starting on June 15 at the Texas Theatre in Dallas, TX, and then continuing to Austin, TX; San Diego, CA; Sacramento, CA; Honolulu, HI; plus stops in the South any many more. They’ll finish up in their hometown of Athens, GA, on June 27 with two showings. Los Angeles-based filmmaker Jason Miller directed the film. Can’t make it to a showing? You can preorder it for $9.99 via Tunes for its release on June 24.

Founded by Kevin Barnes in 1996, of Montreal was named after a failed romance with a girl from the city of Montreal. Their musical style has evolved from vaudeville and twee pop to a blend of electronica, funk, glam, and afrobeat tunes. They cite David Bowie and the Beatles as their biggest influences. The band has released 12 studio albums, the last being 2013’s Lousy with Sylvianbriar.
