Phish Phans Paying Top Dollar To See Band’s “Halloween Costume”
Halloween is a special time for Phish fans. The band is notorious for playing massive three set shows on October 31st, where they don a “musical costume,” in which they cover the entire album of a classic group. The novelty began in 1994, when the band performed the entire White Album by The Beatles in front of costumed fans in Glen Falls, NY and has not yet worn off. Fans demanded even more cover performances and the tradition continued in 1995 with The Who’s Quadrophenia, in 1996 The Talking Heads’ Remain In Light, in 1998 The Velvet Underground’s Loaded and most recently The Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main Street at the band’s 3-day extravaganza Festival 8.
This year, Phish returns to the East coast with a three-night run at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, and fan demand for tickets couldn’t be stronger. As always, early speculation and rumors around the very secretive musical costume have been flying around the Internet, the most popular focusing on an image printed on mail order tickets for the event, that is similar to one used on a Genesis tour poster. The LA Times sat down with Phish band leader and guitarist Trey Anastasio who dropped a vague hint saying:
“This year, this one’s for me. The one we picked, I’m going to get more out of this as a musician than I ever have before. Three songs into it, I called everybody and told them, ‘None of the other ones — I wouldn’t think, hopefully — will have nearly the effect on my playing this one’s going to.”
In anticipation of the surprise, and to attend the band’s first time playing in Atlantic City, Phish tickets for each night are listing and selling for well over face value:
- October 29, 2010: $156 average price/ticket | 160% above face value
- October 30, 2010: $192 average price/ticket | 220% above face value
- October 31, 2010: $303 average price/ticket | 401% above face value
