Schoolboy Q credits rapper 50 Cent with saving his life. That’s a big statement given that the LA-based rapper doesn’t think 50 has the best beats, but loves the confidence he exudes in his music. Schoolboy Q took 50 Cent’s suggestion that after jail focusing on music is a good path and after a 6-month jail stint turning to a rap career redeemed him, the artist confessed. 50 Cent isn’t the only artist Schoolboy Q looks up to, though. He’s named Jay Z as a style muse and has crowned Nas as his favorite rapper. Schoolboy Q isn’t just a combination of his idols though. Since 2010, he’s released three studio albums, Setbacks in 2011, Habits & Contradictions the following year, and Oxymoron earlier this year.

Since early this year Schoolboy Q has been touring in support of that third album. He’s finishing up now with a final show scheduled for this weekend in the UK at Manchester Academy 2 on June 1. While he won’t be on tour this summer, stateside fans can catch him in New York City at Summerstage in Central Park on June 25, in July at Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago, and at Made in America in Los Angeles over Labor Day weekend.
