Tantric favorite and former The Police frontman Sting has announced plans for a new album, due out this fall. The album, entitled The Last Ship, was inspired by a musical of the same name that Sting has been penning for quite some time. The show, set in a shipyard (obviously) near Wallsend, England, is rumored to be making its Broadway debut sometime in 2014. We won’t have to wait until 2014 for some new tunes, though – The Last Ship will hit stores this September. The album will feature several songs from the musical (including the title track) – material Sting has been working on for nearly three years. His last album of original work was Sacred Love, released in 2003, so this is long overdue for Sting fans!
Want to know more about the musical? Sources so far say that the play is set in England during the 1980s (sounds vaguely Billy Elliot) during the decline of the shipbuilding industry. It’s being directed by Joe Mantello, best known for working on Other Desert Cities and Wicked.
