2013 Lineup Information

UPDATE: Green Day

Some big news for the 2013 edition of SXSW. Green Day announced that they will take part in the annual indie festival, set for March 9 through March 18 in Austin, TX. The band will debut their documentary ¡Cuatro! which features footage of their creation of their recent album trilogy as well as footage from recent live performances.

In addition to the ¡Cuatro! documentary, the band will also debut on March 15 Broadway Idiot, which chronicles their journey into live musical theater with the production of American Idiot, based on their album of the same name, and its debut on the Great White Way.

The band will also perform live that night at Austin City Limits Live At The Moody Theater.

UPDATE

Let’s get right to it: Earl Sweatshirt, Captain Murphy (Flying Lotus’ side project), Chief Keef, Billy Bragg, Josh Ritter, Hanni El Khatib, Dillon Francis, Amanda Palmer, Phosphorescent, Weekend, California X, Mykki Blanco, Future Unlimited, and Tijuana Panthers have all been added to SXSW’s mammoth bill.

About SXSW

“After celebrating 25 years as the world’s leading music industry event, the SXSW® Music and Media Conference is back to continue the tradition in 2013. Reaching a quarter of a century of being the biggest and most anticipated convergence of all things music, SXSW is ready to keep the reputation alive by programming an even better event each year.

By day, thousands of conference registrants network in the halls of the Austin Convention Center on their way to do business in the SXSW® Trade Show, sit in on informative panel discussions featuring some of the industry’s key players, gain insight from legendary keynote speakers or plan out their abundant party schedules. At night, SXSW showcases roughly 2,000 musical acts from around the globe, representing well over 50 different countries, on over 90 stages in downtown Austin. All this, and so much more, combine to make SXSW one of the most revered music events, year after year.” – SXSW

Highlights From Past SXSW Festivals

2012 – March 9th – 18th

The 2012 SXSW Festival drew one of the largest crowds ever, as music and film lovers turned out in mass for what was the festival’s 26th year running. SXSW may be best known for its lineup of unknown musicians that often witness their breakout debuts at the festival. Yet, the 2012 lineup was unique, featuring some of the best hip-hop and alternative artists in the business. B.o.B, Citizen Cope, Counting Crows, Eve 6, Hoodie Allen, and T.I. were some of the headliners that made appearances. Lil Wayne, Big Sean, and Kanye West also made surprise appearances. Even Bruce Springstein was in attendance as the music keynote speaker.

The festival’s film portion was equally impressive. The Cabin in the Woods and 21 Jump Street were two movies that made their world-wide premiere at the festival. However, the most talked about portion of SXSW was neither in film nor music. The 2012 SXSW saw the release of several social apps such as Highlight, Glancee, Sonar and Kismet, which were met with similar praise as the release of Foursquare in 2009.

2011 – March 11th – 20th

Seth Priebatsch, founder and CEO of the mobile-gaming platform SCVNGR, was the keynote speaker at SXSW 2011. The highly touted “Interactive” portion of the festival led to a record turn out in 2011, in which nearly 59,000 people attended the festival over the week span. Mike Tyson was one celeberity in attendance at the SXSW Interactive, promoting his new iPhone game with RockLive.

Undefeated, a documentary that would go on to win an Academy Award, and The Divide, a thriller movie, were two films awarded distribution rights. Film critic Christopher Kelly later wrote that SXSW Film went from being “a well-regarded but fundamentally regional event” to having “joined the big leagues of film festivals around the world.”

SXSW Music 2011 featured a surprise live performance from the Foo Fighters, following the screening of their documentary Back and Forth. The Foo Fighters set list included their then-upcoming album Wasting Light.

2010 – March 12th – 21st

Approximately 2,000 bands attended SXSW 2010 and festival reps estimated that over 13,000 industry representatives attended. In an unprecedented turn from last year, the Austin Music Awards was moved from the festival’s opening to closing. Less than surprising, local legend Bob Schneider walked away with 6 awards, including Song of the Year, Singer of the Year, and Band of the Year.

Somewhere close to 13,000 people attended the 2010 Interactive festival, representing a 40% jump over the previous year. The attendance leap was enough to make it the first year in which the interactive festival’s attendance surpassed the music festival’s. The keynote presentation was an interview of then-Twitter CEO Evan Williams.

At the 2010 Film festival, Magnolia Pictures bought the film rights to the science-fiction film Monsters on the night of its screening. The occurrence marked SXSW’s first ever over-night acquisition, which led to attendance by larger studios during the next two SXSW festivals.

2009 – March 13th – 22nd

The 2009 SXSW Interactive saw the launch of the Foursquare application, which was called “the breakout mobile app” of the event by the Mashable blog. The 2009 SXSW Film screened 250 films, including 54 world premieres. Most notably, The Hurt Locker made its US premiere at SXSW. The movie would later go on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2010.
