Tennis aren’t exactly indie royalty, but they’re definitely indie’s middle class. The group can be depended on to release a well-liked album every few years and bring along a sizable contingent of fans without worrying too much about the public eye.

That’s how the group were able to hide out on a boat and write a new album without too much word getting out. The group just announced their album Swimmer will drop on Valentine’s Day, with a tour to follow shortly thereafter.

The band’s Alaina Moore shared in a press release that the first single “Runner” and the album began “began as a guitar riff Patrick recorded while we were living off grid, anchored in a fisherman’s cove called San Juanico.”

Moore shared that they were able to focus on the new album due to the limitations of recording on a boat with what was available.

“The only instruments we had on board were an acoustic guitar and a drum sequencer, but the limitations seemed to work in our favor. Until that point we had no clear vision for our writing,” she said. “The demo Patrick recorded that day outlined our future, the first contours of our next record.”

While Tennis have a festival set later this month, the tour behind their new material begins on February 25 at Kansas City’s Madrid Theatre. They’ll play a string of Texas dates to mark the shift between February and March, including Stubb’s in Austin and Houston’s White Oak Music Hall. A West Coast run will feature stops at the Belly Up Tavern and Portland’s Wonder Ballroom. On the other side of the US, they’ll play DC’s 9:30 Club and Brooklyn Steel. The tour closes out at Saint Louis’ Delmar Hall on May 9.
