It never hurts to have a famous rapper like Drake give you a shout out. Throw in a whole bunch of other critical acclaim like being listed on MTV’s Artists to Watch and Pitchfork reviewing his latest album at 8.5/10 and you can bet that Canadian recording artist Abel Tesfaye, also known as The Weeknd, is heating up the music scene quickly. On more than one occasion his voice has been compared to Michael Jackson’s, but make no mistake The Weeknd isn’t trying to be anyone other than himself. The 23-year-old singer/songwriter started out making mixtapes and producing music for other artists. It was only after he uploaded his work to YouTube that he started to gain recognition, albeit anonymously.

Following his signing to a record label, Republic Records, in 2012 and a re-released compilation album of previous mixtape work called The Trilogy, The Weeknd has been touring his brand of unconventional R&B around the world. Starting this September and running through the end of October, he has over 25 shows scheduled across the U.S., starting off in Berkeley and closing out in Detroit.
