The Who are gearing up to release their first new album of music in 11 years. The new set of songs, simply called Who, comes with a whole raft of high praise from the folks who made it. Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey seem legitimately delighted to be back at it, even in their advanced age.

“I think we’ve made our best album since Quadrophenia in 1973, Pete hasn’t lost it, he’s still a fabulous songwriter, and he’s still got that cutting edge,” Daltrey said of the release.

Townshend said that the albums 11 tracks, including the just released single “Ball and Chain,” were a pure songwriting exercise. He wanted to show the band has still got it.

“There is no theme, no concept, no story, just a set of songs that I (and my brother Simon) wrote to give Roger Daltrey some inspiration, challenges and scope for his newly revived singing voice. Roger and I are both old men now, by any measure, so I’ve tried to stay away from romance, but also from nostalgia if I can,” he said.

Of course, part of flexing that talent means getting out on the road. The Who are already out on the orchestra-backed Moving On tour and U.K. dates behind the new album have been announced.More than likely, it’s just a matter of time before North American dates are added.
