Best Indie Songs All-Time

The term “indie” means a lot of things to a lot of different people. Is music dubbed indie (aka independent) because of a sound? A feeling? A series of instruments? A look? Or just a way of thinking? Does your band have to have a “the” before a noun to be considered? Do you have to perform at copious amounts of music festivals? Maybe you just have to be a recluse.

Most bands can only be indie to a certain point – that is the paradox of being dubbed an indie artist. You’re independent… until you sign to that big label, until you make that giant record, until you’re a household name. What a quandary! Well, while we go off and ponder what it means to be an indie artist, let’s consider the top ten indie rock songs of all time. And we’re defining indie as whatever we want! We’ve got guitars, we’ve got animated characters, we’ve got a brother-and-sister (or wait, is it husband-and-wife) duo, and Julian Casablancas mumbling into a microphone. What more could you want?
