After a three-year hiatus following 2009’s “Eskimo Snow,” WHY? is returning to the alt-music scene with a brand new EP and tour schedule. “Sod and the Seed” will be the focus of frontman Jonathan “Yoni” Wolf and his band’s latest promotional venture across the United States and Europe, in which the group (including Wolf’s older brother, Josiah Wolf, a solo musician in his own right) will attempt to shake off almost a half-decades’ worth of performance rust.

“Sod and the Seed” appears as the latest in a series of releases that began in 2003 with WHY’s? debut album. Boasting the Fiona-Apple-esque, difficult-to-decipher title “Oaklandazulasylum,” it was followed by “Elephant Eyelash” (2005), “Alopecia” (2008), and “Eskimo Snow” (2009). WHY?’s “alternative” sound exhibits the genre’s calling-card categorization difficulties: a mix of folk, harmonies, pop, rock, and hip-hop, the band – like its image-heady lyrics – refuses to be neatly pinned down.

Wolf and co. will, however, be picking back up where they left off three years ago with concert dates beginning late August. For ticket prices and city stops, scroll below:
