Yesterday, Wiz Khalifha released the artwork for his upcoming mixtape 28 Grams and it’s pretty dope. That was my first reaction and that’s still my thought, though my second reaction was that it looked really familiar. That’s when I realized Sonny Shotz of The Kings Dead (and formerly The Dean’s List) had just released his cover art for his upcoming solo project titled American Summer and it’s artwork is remarkably similar.

Take a look for your self in the image below and let us know what you think in the comments below or on Twitter or Facebook.

Really I don’t give shit, I’m eager for both these albums (and I do really like BOTH these covers!) because these are two of my favorite artists and Sonny in particular brings some wildly themed songs/albums out of obscure thought-corners that make listening to him uniquely enjoyable—not to mention the beautiful sonic textures created by his groupmate Mendoza who creates the soundtrack while Sonny writes the script…

Interestingly, the artwork is not the only component of these projects that gives off a similar vibe. Both rappers—though especially Sonny—gained popularity via college friendly weed and party raps such as The Dean List’s Burn It All and Young Khalifa’s Kush & OJ that catapulted to the top of the rap game. These projects were both realeased when the respective rappers were in their early 20s and/or late teens. They’ve grown up in the last few years. Sonny forcefully shredded his college rap image by doing the pop-career-suicidal move of a name change post building an audience. Wiz on the other hand fell in love with Amber Rose and gave birth to a child.

The artists matured and their music experimented in new directions to mixed reactions, but in positive directions overall IMO. However for these new projects both rappers seem to be relaxing a bit and returning to their “fuck-it-I’m-young” roots for a little summertime fun. Don’t get me wrong, I certainly expect the Muslim Christian Sonny to throw out some what-the-fuck-did-he-just-say lines, but shit, what makes Sonny is his what-the-fuck-did-he-just-say lines.
