First Matisyahu did it, now, Yo La Tengo have announced they will perform a string of eight shows to celebrate the Jewish holiday Hanukkah this December. The band will perform in their hometown of Hoboken, NJ, every night of the celebration, which begins on December 8 and ends on December 15. Yo La Tengo have likely been around longer than you’ve been alive. Formed in 1984, Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley formed the husband/wife duo by placing an advertisement to help find other like-minded musicians. The phrase “Yo La Tengo” is Spanish for “I have it,” which comes from a baseball anecdote. Over the course of their 28 years together, Yo La Tengo have released 12 full-length albums. While never quite breaking into mainstream, the indie-rockers have been dubbed “the quintessential critics’ band” and have a strong cult following. Currently, the band is comprised of Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan and James McNew.
