Hot on the heels of a fantastic 2018 campaign in which they marauded through the playoffs en route to a World Series title, the Boston Red Sox have their sights set on being the first back-to-back champion in Major League Baseball since 2000.
In honor of baseball starting back up again, we’ve combed through the Red Sox schedule and highlighted five of the team’s can’t-miss games for the upcoming 2019 season.
Toronto Blue Jays @ Boston Red Sox
Tuesday, April 9
After starting off their season with a grueling 11-game road trip, the Red Sox finally head back to Fenway Park for their home opener on April 9. Boston won 15 out of the 19 games they played against Toronto in 2018, so there’s a good chance you’ll get to hear “Dirty Water” by the Standells after the game following a Sox victory.
New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox
Saturday, June 29
One of the more unique sets of games on Boston’s calendar is a two-game series against the Yanks, set to take place at London Stadium in the United Kingdom. London Stadium was built for the Olympics and is currently the home field for the West Ham United of the Premier League.
This two-game series marks the first time that Major League Baseball will play a regular season game in the United Kingdom. With a seating capacity of 55,000 for the games, the London Series will draw in fans from all over Europe and the World and would be a fantastic away trip for any Sox fan.
Los Angeles Dodgers @ Boston Red Sox
Saturday, July 13
The third game that we’ve highlighted is a rematch of last year’s World Series, which is set to be nationally broadcast on Fox. After last year’s playoffs ended with a 4-1 “gentleman’s sweep,” the Dodgers will be out for revenge which makes this a game worth circling on your calendar.
The three-game series in mid-July is the only time that these two teams will face off against each other in the regular season, but would it surprise anyone if they met again in late October?
New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox
Friday, July 26
Unsurprisingly the Yankees have ended up on this list twice, but this time we’re highlighting the Bronx Bombers first trip to Fenway in 2019. This is undoubtedly one of the most popular games on the schedule for Boston, due to the team’s historical rivalry which was renewed in the first round of the playoffs in 2018. Over the past three seasons, the Red Sox and Yankees have played each other 42 times, with the series tied at 21 games apiece. This should be one of the best matchups of the year, and it will be one of the hottest tickets in town.
Philadelphia Phillies @ Boston Red Sox
Tuesday, August 20
The fifth game on our list has been highlighted for two reasons: it features both a trendy up-and-coming opponent and it’s also a fantastic bang-for-your-buck. In late August, the Philadelphia Phillies make their way up the east coast to take on the Red Sox for a quick two-game series. This series is a fantastic opportunity to see one of the best players in baseball, Bryce Harper, who recently signed a 13-year mega-deal worth more than $330 million.
On top of the two reasons we highlighted, late August is usually a fantastic time to catch a baseball game in Boston as the muggy summer weather usually makes way for mild, cool nights–which means perfect weather to take in a game at Fenway. Tickets for the first game of the series start at just $35.
