Anderson Silva fightAnderson Silva’s fights are getting stale. Of course I enjoyed the head kick on Okami at the end of the first round Saturday at UFC 134, and was exhilarated by the Roy Jones Jr.-esque dropped hands swagger and counter-punches, but there is something about knowing a fighter can’t lose that makes the overall suspense and buildup to a UFC main event just not as exciting as it should be.

This was the case at UFC 134 in Silva’s fight against Yushin Okami. UFC isn’t to blame though. it’s simply that Anderson Silva is so much better than anyone at 185 that no matter who they give him, the fight isn’t going to have the same type of excitement around it that a title fight should have.

Yes, fans, including myself, will always enjoy watching Anderson Silva inside the cage, but there is much to be desired in terms of seeing what “the best pound for pound” MMA fighter of the modern era can do with all his talent. 1st and 2nd round KOs are exciting, but it is time for UFC to stop protecting it’s hand and give us the superfight that we all want before the 36 year old Spider can no longer spin his own web.

When and who Anderson Silva fights next has yet to be determined, but I am throwing my vote in with the many others that feel that Silva’s next fight should be against Georges St-Pierre. There have been rumors about this “superfight” for a long time. The same rumors that we internally were talking about as a possible bout for UFC Rio, which obviously never manifested. If not now when? With a 36 year old Silva, can the organization that does an amazing job of giving fans the fights they want to see, gamble much longer on the ultimate of Ultimate Fighting matches? Let’s take a look at the possible other choices that Joe Silva, Dana White and Zuffa might possibly be able to stall with before the inevitable.

Anderson Silva’s Next Fight – Possible Choices

  • Winner of the Bisping vs. Mayhem Miller match (if either of these two gets the honor of fighting Anderson Silva, I will lose much respect for the UFC)
  • Brian Stann if he wins
  • Dan Henderson (other than GSP, this one would make the most sense to me, other than Lyoto Machida, which is not even in play…)
