Let’s face it: Not every sporting event is family-friendly. As exciting as boxing or mixed martial arts might be for you, the scantily clad women and violence are hardly scream “kid appropriate.”

But don’t resign yourself to a life of family gatherings limited to the living room sofa just yet. It turns out there are quite a few sports and athletic events that are perfect for the whole family. The suggestions on this list are exciting, fun, and free of everything inappropriate for kids. If you’re willing to do a bit of traveling, be sure to market your calendars as you won’t miss out on these awesome family-friendly events!

Harlem Globetrotters

Even if you’re not a basketball fan, you’ve no doubt heard the famous “Harlem Globetrotters Song,” also known as “Sweet Georgia Brown,” at least once in your life. It’s a tune that conjures up images of impossible trick shots, crazy slam dunks, and, of course, balancing a spinning a basketball on top of your finger.

As the name suggests, the Harlem Globetrotters frequently show off for starry-eyed fans the world over. Although they often go abroad, they do perform for American fans from time to time. The next time best time for American families to catch the Globetrotters will be August 16 – 19 at the Wildwood Convention Center in New Jersey.

GoPro Mountain Games

The largest annual event in Vail, Colorado, the GoPro Mountain Games brings together professional and amateur athletes. Not to mention anyone with a love of art, music, and the great outdoors. As the Denver Post writes, the world’s top athletes use the yearly event “to kick off their summer competitive season.” However, families throughout the region love the GoPro Games as a fun summer getaway. Not only is it great for the kids, but the family dog is also welcome!

Home Run Derby

Before the best of baseball face off in the annual MLB All-Star Game, everyone gathers to watch sluggers try to score as many home runs as they can. Traditionally held the day before the All-Stars game, the Home Run Derby is the equivalent of eating dessert before dinner. After all, every baseball fan is hoping for a home run whenever their favorite players step up to the plate. With the Derby, failing to score a home run is the equivalent of striking out! With the stakes so high, a bit of baseball magic is inevitable.

“Punkin Chunkin”

Pumpkin chunking, or “punkin chunkin” as it’s typically known, is a type of sport that involves sending rotting pumpkins flying through the air. The higher they go and further away, the better. Normally associated with the fall, you can find both formal and informal punkin chunkin events across the United States.

The most famous competition takes place in Delaware, with the next competition scheduled for November 3-5, 2017. However, if you can’t make it to the East Coast, you should check fall festivals in your local community to see if similar punkin chunkin events might be taking place.

Cirque Du Soleil

You might be scratching your head at the idea of Cirque Du Soleil as a sporting event. While not a sport in the traditional sense, this “circus of the sun” involves feats of incredible athleticism. The skills, grace, and timing required to pull off many of the stunts are as nerve-wracking as any sporting event. With more than 20 productions worldwide, there are plenty of locations to visit, and always an opportunity to catch an amazing show.

As you can see, there are a diverse array of events available. Whether your family loves the outdoors or would rather passively take in the sights, you’re bound to have fun. Best of all, getting out together means you’re creating fun family members that will last a lifetime. Take that, Netflix!
