International Champions Cup Coming to America Again in 2014
Guinness International Champions Cup
Details for the 2014 Guinness International Champions Cup have been announced, including a significant turnover in this year’s eight team lineup, new cities and bigger stadiums, and a new format that will include a round robin of two four-team divisions around the US before semifinals, a third place game, and a final all taking place once again at Sun Life Stadium in Miami. Unlike last year’s inaugural version, the MLS will not be represented this year as it was by LA Galaxy in 2013 (when they claimed fourth place behind Real Madrid, Chelsea, and AC Milan).
Teams this season include Inter, AC Milan, and Real Madrid as returners, with AS Roma, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Olympiacos making their International Champions Cup debuts. The new format will kick off July 26 with games tentatively scheduled in Phoenix, Denver, and Chicago. Round-robin games among the two four-team Western and Eastern divisions will continue in Pittsburgh, Washington, DC, Dallas, Philadelphia, Hartford, Charlotte, and New York City (two games). There will also be a game at The Big House in Ann Arbor, MI, between defending Cup champs Real Madrid and Premier League power Manchester United. After that round is complete, the top two teams from each division will go to Miami for semifinal games before a third-place game and final. Last year’s final was a huge win in Florida, and Cup organizers expect this football version of the final four to serve as a great encore to the inaugural success. 2013 Tournament Information
A new International Champions Cup soccer tournament is beginning in 2013, and the United States will be the host for most of the ten-day exhibition for a select cast of futbol champions from around the globe. The two-time defending Major League Soccer Cup champion Los Angeles Galaxy will be the only representative from the United States in the tournament this year, lead by US National Team star Landon Donovan but missing the now-retired superstar David Beckham. The LA Galaxy have long been one of the more accomplished ambassadors from the MLS to the international soccer scene, twice winning the CONCACAF Champions League. As the MLS has worked to build its brand and the enthusiasm of US fans for the professional game, it has often staged visits from premier European clubs to stateside venues to take on the best MLS clubs. One of the most frequent visitors has been La Liga power Real Madrid, and Cristiano Ronaldo & his teammates will make a 15th stateside trip for the inaugural Guinness International Champions Cup in 2013.
Joining these two clubs in the first half of the 2013 International Champions Cup draw are Italian Serie A champion Juventus and contender Inter Milan. The second half of the draw competing for the Inaugural Guinness International Champions Cup trophy was just announced, and it features another previous La Liga champion, Valencia, as well as a third Serie A team in Champions League-qualifier AC Milan. The final two teams are the only representatives from the prestigious English Premier League: Chelsea, winners of the Champions League two seasons ago and reigning Europa League winners, and Everton, a well-known club in the US because they once employed Landon Donovan and are currently the home of US Men’s National Team keeper Tim Howard.
The second announcement of teams was made over three weeks after the initially stated date of May 3, which allowed all of the current European seasons to conclude, club managers to retire, be fired, or move on to newly vacated opportunities. The last piece of the European season was the 2013 Champions League final between two German Bundesliga teams, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. Neither of these German teams will join the first Guinness International Cup bracket. For the teams that are participating, Everton will be without longtime manager David Moyes, who is now destined for Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Chelsea will enter this preseason Guinness Cup on the heels of earning their third straight bid into Champions League play next season. With two teams each from La Liga and the English Premier League, three Serie A clubs and MLS champion LA Galaxy, the first annual Guinness International Champions Cup will be diverse and accomplished field of footballers hitting the pitch on American soil.
