MLB Headlines in Week 7

This week in Major League Baseball sees an uncommonly large number of star players returning to their teams’ active rosters from long stints on the disabled list. Some of the teams have managed to play well despite losing a player for weeks or months and are looking for another gear with their returning star. Others have suffered in the win-loss department and hope that the healthy player will help turn around the season at a relatively early stage in the season. In a strange twist, the New York Yankees are an underdog story in the 2013 MLB season; many players including Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter have yet to have a single at bat this season, but they still lead the AL East. This week, star outfielder Curtis Granderson is returning after suffering a broken forearm in spring training. Granderson is a defensive star and has had over 40 home runs and 100 runs batted in during the last two seasons. His bat and veteran leadership will surely help the Yankees over the long haul of the season as they attempt to round into the championship form they expect of themselves.

Two more All-Star outfielders are returning to their contending teams, as well. Coco Crisp started out this season for the Oakland Athletics with unexpected power in his bat to compliment his defensive range, on-base skills, and base stealing savvy. He strained a muscle in his leg during a 19-inning game in late April, and since his departure the team has dropped behind the Texas Rangers in the AL West race. The A’s are hoping Crisp’s speed and power can boost their offense back to a level where the can contend for a second straight division title.

In the National League East, the Atlanta Braves will welcome young phenom Jason Heyward back into the lineup. Since hitting a home run in his first MLB at-bat, Heyward has been a face of the franchise and had a resurgent season in 2012. After a slow start this year, Heyward and the Braves are looking for him to return to form and be the third piece in an star-studded outfield with brothers Justin & BJ Upton. Atlanta currently leads the Washington Nationals for the division lead, and Heyward’s return could mean trouble for the rest of the National League.
