Given the length of the lockout and unique nature of the pending season, the NHL schedule this year will be a 48-game campaign where each team will play only conference games. With teams having started practice this past Sunday, the first day of the season will be this coming Sunday, January 19, with 13 games on the schedule.

January 19 – Chicago Blackhawks @ Los Angeles Kings – the Kings lift the banner

January 19 – Pittsburgh Penguins @ Philadelphia Flyers – an intense Pennsylvania rivalry

January 22 & March 9 – Nashville Predators @ Minnesota Wild / Minnesota Wild @ Nashville Predators – Ryan Suter of the Wild takes on his former team

January 26 – Los Angeles Kings @ Phoenix Coyotes – divisional champs square off against the Stanley Cup champs

February 1 – Chicago Blackhawks @ Vancouver Canucks – will the Blackhawks possibly have Roberto Luongo behind the net?

March 2 – Pittsburgh Penguins @ Montreal Canadiens – former Penguins head coach Michel Therrien takes on his former team

March 18 – Carolina Hurricanes @ New York Rangers – the Staal brothers face off against one another
