NHL Playoff Teams
Two weeks and six or seven games remain on each team’s 2013 NHL regular season schedule. While only four teams have clinched Stanley Cup playoff spots – the Penguins, Canadiens, Blackhawks, and Ducks – the prospective matchups for the top eight teams in both conferences are starting to come into play. What’s more, a couple of the current Stanley Cup playoff pairings still have two regular season games left between the participants. In what could be a battle of national capitals, the Washington Capitals and Ottawa Senators have two NHL regular reason clashes remaining, one at each team’s home arena. The Capitals have overcome a terrible start to take over the Southeastern Division and the No. 3 seed behind the firepower of captain Alexander Ovechkin, while the Senators are attempting to track down the rival Maple Leafs without giving ground to either the New York Rangers or the New York Islanders.

The other possible 2013 Stanley Cup playoff first round pairing is between Pacific Division rivals: the Los Angeles Kings and the San Jose Sharks. These two teams both trail division-leading Anaheim and are unlikely to track down the Ducks for the Pacific title and No. 2 seed. Kings versus Sharks has resulted in a 1-1 split so far in the 2013 NHL regular season schedule, and these teams face each other this week and next (closing out the season), in games that could determine Stanley Cup first round home-ice advantage. The Kings are already in better shape than last season’s No. 8 seed which barely got them into the Stanley Cup playoff, but that proved to be enough as the went on to claim the Cup. These games against the Sharks are two important final regular season steps toward a successful defense of Lord Stanley’s Cup.
