Off Road Racing = Off the Charts Awesomeness
Off Road Racing 2013
For those of you combination outdoor lovers and NASCAR enthusiasts, off road racing is might just be the sport of your dreams. Though sometimes it involves high deserts and 500-mile long cross-country races, in its other incarnations it involves racing tricked out cars around a large dirt arena (aka what we consider the outdoors these days). One of the more intrepid organizations is the Las Vegas based High Desert Racing Association (HDRA). This professional off-road racing organization is actually over thirty years old (did they even have cars back in the ’70s??), but merged and faded, until it was rejuvenated in 2011 by desert racing proponents: Roger Norman, Robert Gross and Ken Flippin.
On the other end of the spectrum is Robby Gordon’s Stadium Super Trucks, a series of events in which drivers race around dirt paths that lead to jumps, and ramps, and things like that, in the confines of various stadiums across the United States. The event is modeled after the now defunct Mickey Thompson Off-Road Race Series – a series of coliseum races that NASCAR Hall of Famer Mickey Thompson organized, which ran from 1983-1994. Decidedly more circular than the typical HDRA events, the stadium does allow participants to actually see the entirety of the events.
