No. 3 Oregon Ducks at No. 5 Stanford Cardinals

(11/7/13)

Marcus Mariota has been overshadowed since his first game as the Oregon Ducks quarterback. Credit is either given to running backs like De’Anthony Thomas, his former head coach, Chip Kelly, or another famous Oregon recruit, last year’s Heisman winner Johnny Manziel (though he calls Texas A&M home these days, obviously). But it’s been Mariota’s speed, passing accuracy, and near-perfect decision making that’s made the No. 3 Oregon Ducks football machine run so well the past season and a half, helping his team to a record of 20-1 and his personal status as a Heisman Trophy frontrunner. But that one loss. Oh, that one. The 2012 Stanford Cardinal – Oregon Ducks game serves as the only blemish on Oregon’s otherwise perfect record with Mariota at the helm. And since the Cardinal’s victory at Oregon’s Autzen Stadium last year, the Ducks have been flying high en route to this rematch: in the ten games since their loss to Stanford, Oregon has scored no fewer than 35 points.

This Thursday, November 7, this PAC 12 North rivalry will be renewed with both teams in the top five of the latest 2013 BCS rankings. No. 3 Oregon at No. 5 Stanford marks the fifth straight meeting between the two with at least one of the teams being ranked in the top ten. Each team has managed to ruin the others’ BCS Championship dreams in the last couple of seasons, so this year’s Oregon – Stanford matchup is dripping with tension on a national title level and for a PAC 12 championship game berth. Oregon at Stanford average ticket prices for Thursday’s game have quickly risen to $183, a fair-sized chunk of change for a mid-week college football game. Though both coaches who helped forge this rivalry have moved on to the NFL, the teams’ styles still clash almost as perfectly as they execute their respective game plans. Look for another classic installment of the Ducks – Cardinal rivalry this week, and drop us your review of the Palo Alto scene at Stanford Stadium if you’re lucky enough to see the Stanford vs. Oregon game in person!

Pac 12 North Title Showdown

Last season, Stanford came onto Oregon’s home field and stifled the otherwise high-powered offense, ruining Oregon’s BCS Championship hopes. Oregon hopes to avenge this signature loss this week in Palo Alto.
