Paterno’s Dismissal Leads To Dramatic Ticket Price Drop
Last night’s announcement by Penn State University’s board of trustees that Joe Paterno would be immediately relieved of his duties after a 46-year run as the school’s head football coach led to a precipitous decline in average ticket prices to this Saturday’s home finale against Nebraska. After ticket prices reached week-high peak average of $157 on Wednesday, average prices recorded this morning for Saturday’s game had fallen down sharply to $105.
On Wednesday, the secondary market for game tickets was highly active as it was assumed by many that Paterno would retire effective at the end of the season, meaning that this Saturday would be the final opportunity for Penn State fans to see Division-I’s all-time winningest coach call a game in Happy Valley. But the announcement by the school’s board late Wednesday night that Paterno would not be granted the opportunity to finish out the season has evidently dampened this short-term enthusiasm of Penn State fans.
As of noon Thursday, the get-in price for the game based on SeatGeek listings now stands at $71, with numerous tickets available in the $80-$90 range.
