Penn State-Nebraska Football Ticket Prices Surge With Paterno Retirement Talk
With news of Joe Paterno’s retirement at the conclusion of the 2011-12 college football season, Penn State football fans have jolted the secondary ticket market for the legendary coach’s last appearance against the rival Nebraska. Average ticket prices for Saturday’s game at Beaver Stadium rose by nearly $50 from Nov. 8-9, increasing from $98 to $146.
As speculation of Paterno’s future with the institution became harder to predict following a scandal involving former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, daily average ticket prices to the game fluctuated quite a bit this week. Prices bottomed out Wednesday Nov. 8 at $99 in the wake of the scandal but spiked today at $147 upon the announcement of Paterno’s retirement.
Average prices this week are well below running averages throughout much of the season. Through the first two weeks of the year, average ticket prices for the game stood in the $170-190 range through August and September before dipping slightly to the $155-160 range through the final three weeks of October.
