The Pittsburgh Pirates, like most small market teams, have a small budget when it comes to free agency, so they have to get crafty with who they sign and what trades they make. The Pirates made a few smart moves in the offseason thus far, bolstering their lineup and their pitching staff, with the hopes of having their first winning season in franchise history since they went 96-66 and went to the NLCS in 1992. The Pirates did have a rebound year in 2012 as a franchise, posting a 79-83 record and going the majority of the season in the thick of the NL Central division race before floundering in the month of September.
Pittsburgh Pirates New Players 2013
The Pirates added several veteran arms to their pitching staff that should help them in 2013. Francisco Liriano, Jeff Karstens and Jason Grilli join the team and provide depth for both the rotation and the bullpen. As for the lineup, the Pirates added Russell Martin, who left the Yankees to sign with them in the offseason. Martin will become the starting catcher for the Pirates and looks to be a key part of the offense.
