While many Super Bowl viewers watch to witness the big game take place, many stick around for the halftime show. This year’s performers will be Jennifer Lopez and Shakira. But in true halftime show fashion, fans never really know who or what to expect from the biggest musical performance of the year. Here at TBA, we’ve come up with some predictions for the powerhouse duo’s halftime performance at the 2020 Super Bowl.

The Setlist

Both Shakira and J. Lo have their own chart-topping, record-breaking songs to bring to the table for this performance. Historically, halftime shows are an opportunity for artists to play their greatest hits alongside their newer material in order to promote it to a wide audience. (After all, last year’s Super Bowl garnered an average of 98.2 million television viewers.)

From Shakira, we can expect to hear her bestselling tracks like “Hips Don’t Lie” and “She Wolf.” J. Lo brings her classic 90s dance hits such as “Let’s Get Loud” and “Jenny From The Block.” While it’s expected that the duo will include their most well-known songs as part of their halftime setlist, their new material may also have its time in the spotlight. J. Lo released two singles,  “Medicine” and “Baila Conmigo” earlier this year, ” while Shakira released her third live album, Shakira In Concert: El Dorado World Tour. This recently-released material might make its way through the halftime show’s airwaves after they perform some of their big hitter songs.

The Performance

Shakira and J. Lo are both equally known for their dynamic stage presence and spectacular performances. From flashy outfits to insane choreography, Shakira and J. Lo both pull out all the stops at their live shows. Hence, we expect their halftime show performance to be no different. Both pop stars are known for their dancing abilities. J. Lo is a formally trained dancer in a wide range of genres, and has been practicing the craft since childhood. Shakira is no different, with a background in Latin dance styles and belly dancing, which stems from her Lebanese and Colombian heritage. Surely, their halftime debut will be packed with intricate choreography, along with an elaborate stage show.

In a recent interview with US Weekly, Lopez shared her excitement over her debut halftime show performance.

“It’s a huge platform, big stage to perform on — one of the biggest shows of the year — and every artist dreams of doing it,” she expressed. “I’m so excited that they chose two strong women, but also Latinas.”

Surprise Guest Performers

In recent history, Super Bowl halftime shows have included surprise guest performers that join the main act on stage on the football field. Last year’s halftime show performed by pop-rockers Maroon 5 included rappers Travis Scott and Big Boi, performers that weren’t announced until the halftime show was live on-air. In 2014, Bruno Mars famously brought out alt-rock giants Red Hot Chili Peppers as a surprise special guest, starkly contrasting his smooth r&b-pop sound. While special guests are a hit-or-miss with Super Bowl halftime show fans, it’s not a stretch to assume that J. Lo and Shakira might have some surprise performers up their sleeves. To round out the Latin pop divas, a special guest performance from another powerhouse vocalist such as Grammy award-winning and Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalía might be in the cards.
