Matchups: Texas Tech vs. No. 5 Baylor in Texas Shootout
Texas Tech Red raiders at No. 5 Baylor Bears
Last week, the Baylor Bears‘ clash with the Oklahoma Sooners was somewhat of an afterthought. Sharing the Thursday night stage with the more established rivalry of Oregon & Stanford, Baylor managed to “only” hang 41 points in defeating the then-climbing Sooners who were coming off of a hard fought victory over Texas Tech. With Oregon’s loss, Baylor remains as the only undefeated super-fast offense in the BCS National Championship race, daring the Big 12 opponents left on their schedule and prospective BCS bowl opponents to keep underestimating them. This week, they get a reeling Texas Tech squad in the midst of a three-game losing streak, a shadow of the ascendant young squad they were through this season’s first seven weeks. These “other” Texas teams will meet in their annual showdown in the Dallas area, a neutral-site battle that’ll attempt to fill the massive scoreboard in “Jerry’s World” of AT&T Stadium with enough points for every Texan to be satisfied. While neither team is a traditional power and neither has home field advantage, the average ticket price for the 2013 Baylor – Texas Tech game is still up to $85 on the secondary market. The Red Raiders’ fall from the BCS top ten has certainly hurt demand, but the potential for otherworldly pace & scoring still has plenty of Lone Star State residents interested.
The offensive fireworks are all but guaranteed in this year’s installment of the Texas Tech – Baylor rivalry thanks to two head coaches who recruit and lead in similar fashions despite the 20-plus years of age that separate them. Kliff Kingsbury arrived in Lubbock this spring with “Guns Up,” ready to return the Red Raiders attack to the levels he once achieved as their quarterback. He has rotated two true freshmen in to quarterback the offense he implemented last season for Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M, and the recent struggles cannot hide the potential in future years for this squad. At Baylor, Art Briles has continued to evolve the offense that helped make Robert Griffin III a Heisman winner two seasons ago. Quarterback Bryce Petty & a herd market of speedy skill position players will attempt to run the Red Raiders out of town as they continue to press forward for national respect and a shot at the traditional powers in the BCS. Baylor’s schedule is backloaded, but their final stretch of four games this season could see them shoot up the rankings (somehow) faster than they can rack up points on opponents. Don’t blink this weekend; you never know what you’ll miss.

Rise of Baylor Football
While Baylor football is most often associated with Robert Griffin III, it’s been coach Art Briles and the deep talent of Texas high school football that have helped sustain the development of the Baylor Bears football program.
