The WWE (formerly World Wrestling Entertainment) is slogging its way through its fiftieth year. Think about that in terms of sweaty men grappling with each other, or don’t. The WWE Championship was already fought in Phoenix on January, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson taking a break from his phenomenal acting career to win his eighth title at this twenty sixth annual “Royal Rumble.” The similarly prestigious World Heavyweight Championship went down (or rather Smack(ed)Down) on January 8th, with Alberto Del Rio emerging as the victor.
Fear not, there are many many more upcoming WWE Events. Both the RAW and SmackDown series are continuing through the spring. And this past Monday, the WrestleMania XXIX main event fighters were confirmed when John Cena beat CM Punk guaranteeing him a title shot. Cena and “The Rock” will face off on April 29th, at the 26th WrestleMania’s main event.
Interestingly, as I learned from WWE South Park Episode, and confirmed on Wikipedia (both highly credible sources), WWE’s shows are all pre-scripted and storyline-driven, with the fighters rehearsing moves and knowing the winner before the match is fought. What a strange world we live in.
