Tennessee Volunteers Basketball Details

Some college basketball arenas are cozy, or cramped. Others are big and sprawling. Thompson-Boling Arena on Tennessee’s Knoxville campus fits in the latter category, and it’s a great place to watch a Vols game.

In 2007, Thompson-Boling was downsized to its current capacity of just over 20,000. It used to be college basketball’s largest arena, and still ranks near the top. The building’s record crowd was 25,610 for a 1989 game against Kentucky.

The Vols’ rivalry with Kentucky goes back to 1910, with Tennessee holding more victories over the Wildcats than any other team, including a season sweep in 2018.

Along with Kentucky, Tennessee was one of the founding members of the Southeastern Conference in 1933. Since then, they’ve made more than 20 NCAA Tournament appearances, and won multiple regular-season conference titles.

The Vols have retired jerseys for a number of amazing players. Among these is Bernard King, Ernie Grunfeld, Allan Houston and Dale Ellis. King and Grunfeld were New Yorkers billed as the “Bernie and Ernie Show” in the 1970s. The duo led Tennessee to a 61-20 record over three seasons, capped off by an SEC championship in 1977.

If you want to blend into a Vol crowd, you need to know the words to Rocky Top. Here’s the chorus to get you started:

Rocky Top, you’ll always be home sweet home to me; Good ol’ Rocky Top, Rocky Top, Tennessee; Rocky Top, Tennessee.

Make sure to memorize those lyrics, put on your best orange attire, and get your Tennessee basketball tickets now!
