Tennessee Volunteers Football Details

The Volunteers have won six national titles in program history (1938, 1940, 1950, 1951, 1967, 1998) and they are hoping to add a seventh in the near future. The guy tasked with getting that championship back to Knoxville is head coach Butch Jones. Jones has been a remarkable coach throughout his career, as he turned around programs at both Central Michigan and Cincinnati before heading to Tennessee. In Jones’ first year with the Volunteers, he went just 5-7. In the three years after that, Jones went 25-14 with three bowl game victories. This is the right man for the job in Knoxville, and he’ll continue to have fans packing the seats at Neyland Stadium. The venue holds 102,455 people, which makes it the fifth-biggest stadium in college football.

Tennessee is loaded with top-tier talent, but there is nobody that is more important to this team than running back John Kelly and defensive lineman Kahlil McKenzie. As a sophomore, Kelly ran for 630 yards with five touchdowns out of a crowded backfield. He was the third option a year ago, but he is now a workhorse for this Volunteers team. His ability to run the ball will help keep his defense off the field, although his doing so would mean we got to see less of McKenzie. The 6’3’’, 325-pound lineman was banged up a bit in 2016, but he is one of the best defensive players in the nation. He’s a near-lock to be playing on Sundays at some point in the near future, but for now he’ll continue to anchor a tough Volunteers defense.
