Texas Rangers Details

The Rangers franchise moved to Texas from Washington DC in 1972. The club is based in Arlington, Texas and is named for the state’s most famous law enforcement agency of the same name. The Rangers are winning the battle for Texas baseball fandom

According to an analysis of SeatGeek data published prior to the 2019 MLB season, the Rangers are currently winning the battle for Texas, as they are the top team in 168 Texas counties compared to 83 in-state counties for the Astros. The Rangers are also the team with the second-most U.S. counties overall at 287, behind only the Atlanta Braves (515).

Rangers counties in total cover roughly 340,000 square miles, and the team is behind only the Mariners (more than 800,000 square miles) and Rockies (nearly 400,000 square miles) in total area coverage.

Additional findings in our data include:

  • The Braves, with strong support across the southeastern U.S., are the most popular team in 515 counties -- most in the MLB
  • The Mariners, who control Alaska and much of the Pacific Northwest, are the team that covers the greatest land area
  • The Braves are also in control of the most “out of state counties” with 360, followed by the Royals (223) and Cardinals (205)
  • Baseball allegiance in Pennsylvania is split among seven teams, more than any other state
