The 1975 Details

The 1975 is an English rock band that was founded in Manchester, England. Made up of a lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, lead guitarist, bassist, and drummer, the 1975 started playing together as teenagers. What started as a cover band soon turned into a legitimate rock band that was signed with Dirty Hit and Polydor Records.

According to band member Matthew Healy, the band’s name was inspired by “scribblings found on the back page of a poetry book by Jack Kerouac that stated ‘1 June, The 1975.’” Years after the band had formed, in 2012, they released their first EP entitled “Facedown.” From there, the 1975 gained popularity and started touring around England and Ireland, reaching the United States in early 2014.

The band released a self-titled album in 2013 which debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart. The band’s success only continued to grow. Performing at events including the Freedom Festival, the iTunes Festival, and Coachella, the 1975 now had a huge following.

In an effort to keep folks talking, in 2015, the 1975 deleted all of their social media accounts. Their fans speculated that perhaps the band had broken up. Turns out it was simply a publicity stunt – a good one at that – to draw attention to their second studio album, “I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It.” This rather long-titled album topped both the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200.

In 2016, their second album won Best Album at the UK’s Q Awards. The following year, the 1975 took home the title of Best British Group at the Brit Awards. With more album releases and a growing fanbase, the 1975 will most likely see a collection of awards in their future.
