The Spongebob Musical Details

Inspired by the popular animated series by Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants the Musical is the brainchild of veteran Broadway director Tina Landau. Set in the familiar land of Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob SquarePants takes audiences on a high-stakes adventure as the town erupts into chaos and an unexpected hero takes center stage.

SpongeBob SquarePants opened to critical acclaim, earning twelve Tony Award nominations in its first year and winning the Tony Award for Outstanding New Broadway Musical. The musical received over thirty awards nominations in all, winning twelve of them.

Writer and Director Tina Landau received the 2018 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, her first Tony Award. Recognized for her outstanding contribution to the arts, Tina Landau was also named USA Ford Fellow of 2007, earning a grant from the United States Artists arts advocacy group. She has taught her craft at several schools, including her alma mater, Yale University. She has also taught at Yale School of Drama and Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.

SpongeBob SquarePants launched with Ethan Slater as SpongeBob SquarePants. Ethan was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of SpongeBob SquarePants. Within a year of the show's launch in 2017, Ethan Slater had earned six nominations and won five awards, including the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical, and the Broadway.com Audience Awards for Favorite Breakthrough Performance by a male performer.

Another standout performer featured in the show's launch is Gavin Lee. Best known for his 2007 portrayal of Bert in Mary Poppins, this British actor has been performing onstage since he appeared in Crazy for You in 1997. As Squidward Tentacles in SpongeBob SquarePants, Gavin Lee has already been nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. He has won two Drama Desk Awards, both for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical in 2007 and 2018 for Mary Poppins and SpongeBob SquarePants respectively. He has also appeared in Oklahoma!, Les Misérables, Singin' in the Rain and Peggy Sue Got Married, just to name a few.
