Toronto Blue Jays Postseason History

Toronto has been one of baseball’s Canadian outposts for many years, and the city has been one of the sites of thrilling playoff baseball north of the border. The Blue Jays have produced some incredible postseason moments, with some of the league’s most memorable home runs taking place in Toronto, home runs that are still talked about to this very day.

One of those home runs came in the World Series, and brought the Blue Jays their second consecutive title. The year was 1993, and the Jays were taking on the Philadelphia Phillies in the series, hoping to bring home a second title in as many seasons. Toronto was down 6-5, and managed to get two men on base against Phillies closer Mitch Williams. Joe Carter came to the plate, and hit a three-run, walk-off, World Series clinching home run to deliver the Jays their repeat championship.

Of course, for Carter’s home run to seal a repeat for the Blue Jays, they had to win the 1992 championship as well. They did that by defeating the Atlanta Braves in six games, winning the deciding game in an 11-inning thriller on the road to make themselves the first Canadian team to win the World Series.

During Toronto’s postseason history, the team has formed some rivalries, with that against the Texas Rangers being perhaps the biggest of them all. The Jays have gone toe-to-toe with the Rangers on multiple occasions in the Division Series in the 2010s, with emotions running high in those series and the Jays producing some of their best playoff moments out of those intense games.

At the top of the list of great moments for the Blue Jays against the Rangers is Jose Bautista’s home run, and subsequent bat flip, in the deciding fifth game of their series in 2015. Texas had a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning of that game, before the Jays exploded for four runs and put themselves ahead in the series for good. Bautista’s home run came with the score tied at 3-3, and sent a Rogers Centre crowd, one that had been nervous about the fact that the road team had won all four of the previous games in the series, into a state of joy.
