Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays joined the American League in 1977. After the Expos moved from Montreal to Washington after the 2004 season, the Blue Jays became the only Major League Baseball team based in Canada.

The Jays struggled early on, but by the late 80s and early 90s, they emerged as one of the best teams in the major leagues. The Blue Jays’ had their best seasons in 1992 and 1993 when the club won back-to-back World Series titles. They won their 1993 title at home against the Philadelphia Phillies. In the series-deciding Game 6, the Phillies took a late lead after a five-run seventh inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Joe Carter hit a three-run, walk-off home run to win the game and the World Series for the Blue Jays. The Jays’ roster also included Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar. Alomar won ten Gold Glove awards in his career, and the Blue Jays have since retired his number 12 jersey.

Blue Jays fans know as well as any that it’s not easy to field a winning baseball team. After Toronto’s World Series win in ‘93, the team did not make the playoffs again for 22 years. The Jays finally returned to the playoffs in 2015 after winning the AL East and followed that season with another playoff appearance (as the Wild Card team) in 2016. The Jays reached the ALCS in both years.

In 2017, the Blue Jays finished under .500 and fourth in the AL East. Although it was a down year for the team, Justin Smoak had a breakout year. He led the team with 38 home runs and started at first base for the American League All Stars. Marcus Stroman led the team’s pitchers with 13 wins and won a Gold Glove award.

The Blue Jays play at Rogers Centre, which is famous for its retractable roof.
